Psalms 139
Open Word Bible
For the music director. Of David. A psalm. LORD, you have looked deep into me, and you know me. Whether I sit down or get up, you know it; even from far away you grasp what I am thinking. When I travel and when I lie down, you sift through it all; every path I take is well known to you. No word is yet on my tongue, and already, LORD, you know the whole of it. You close me in from behind and from in front; you have placed your hand on me. Knowledge like this is beyond me, too wonderful; it towers so high that I cannot reach it. Where could I go to get away from your Spirit? Where could I run to escape your presence? Should I climb up to the heavens, you are there; should I lie down in Sheol, there you are as well. If I take flight on the wings of the dawn and go to live beyond the farthest sea, there too your hand would be leading me, and your right hand would take hold of me. If I tell myself that the darkness will surely overwhelm me and the light around me will turn to night, even the darkness hides nothing from you; night shines as bright as day, and dark and light are the same to you. It was you who made the deepest parts of me; you wove my body together while I was still in my mother’s womb. I give you thanks, for the way I was made is awe-inspiring and marvelous. What you make is wonderful, and deep within I know it well. Not one of my bones was hidden from you as I was being formed out of sight, worked like fine embroidery deep within the earth. Your eyes saw me while I was still unshaped; in your book they were all written down, the days that were shaped for me, each one of them set in place. God, how I treasure your thoughts! How immense their number is! Should I try to count them, they would outnumber the sand. I wake up, and I am with you still. God, if only you would put the wicked to death! Murderers, get away from me, those who name you as they plot their wickedness; your enemies speak your name in falsehood. LORD, how could I not hate those who hate you, or feel disgust for those who rise up against you? My hatred for them is total; they have become my own enemies. God, look deep into me and know my heart; put me to the test and know my restless thoughts. Look and see whether I am on a path that brings harm, and guide me along the road that never ends.
