Psalms 94

Open Word Bible

God of retribution, LORD, God of retribution, shine out! Stand up, Judge of all the earth, and give the arrogant what their deeds have earned. LORD, how much longer will the wicked, how much longer will the wicked celebrate? Insolent words gush from them; everyone who does evil talks big. They grind down your people, LORD; they oppress the nation that belongs to you. Widows and foreigners they put to death; orphans they murder. They say, “The LORD is not looking; Jacob’s God pays no attention.” Get some understanding, you brutish people! Fools, when will you start to think wisely? Will the one who set the ear in place not hear? Will the one who shaped the eye not see? Will the one who disciplines nations not correct them, the one who teaches humans all they know? The LORD knows what humans are thinking, and that their thoughts are only a puff of air. How blessed is the one whom you correct, LORD, and train through your instruction, giving them calm in the days of trouble, while the pit is being dug for the wicked. The LORD will not reject his people; he will never desert those who belong to him. For justice will once again be joined to what is right, and all who are honest at heart will follow it. Who will take my side against the wicked? Who will stand with me against those who do wrong? If the LORD had not helped me, I would soon have been living where all is silent. The moment I said, “My foot is giving way,” your loyal love, LORD, held me up. When my worries crowd in on me, your comfort fills me with joy. Will a ruling power bent on ruin ever be your partner, one that uses the law to create misery? They gather against the righteous to take their lives, and they condemn innocent people to death. But the LORD has proved to be my high fortress; my God has been a rock that shelters me. He will make their evil recoil on them and put an end to them through their own wickedness; the LORD our God will put an end to them.
