Psalms 40

Open Word Bible

I waited and kept on waiting for the LORD, and he bent down toward me and listened to my cry for help. He drew me up from the roaring pit, out of the clinging mud; he planted my feet on a rock and steadied my steps. He gave me a new song to sing, a hymn for our God. Many people will look on and be filled with awe, and they will put their trust in the LORD. How blessed are those who make the LORD their trust, who do not turn to the arrogant or to those who wander off after lies! LORD my God, you have done so many things, your wonders and your plans for us; no one can compare with you! If I tried to tell them all and speak of them, there would be more than I could count. You took no pleasure in sacrifice and offering, but you opened my ears; you did not ask for burnt offerings or sin offerings. Then I said, “Here I come! What I must do is written down for me in the scroll of the book. My God, I love to do what you want; your instruction is deep inside me.” In the great assembly I have announced the good news of righteousness. I have not held my lips back; you know it, LORD. Your justice I did not keep shut up in my heart; I talked of how faithful you are and how you rescue. Your loyal love and your truth I did not hide from the great assembly. And you, LORD, will not hold back your tender mercy from me; your loyal love and your truth will guard me always. Troubles too many to count have closed in around me; my sins have caught up with me, and I cannot see. They outnumber the hairs on my head, and my courage has left me. LORD, be willing to rescue me! LORD, hurry and help me! Let those who hunt for my life to snatch it away be shamed and confounded, all of them; let those who wish me harm be driven back and humiliated. Let those who jeer at me, “Aha! Aha!”, be stunned by their own shame. But may everyone who looks for you shout for joy and find gladness in you; may those who love to see you save never stop saying, “How great the LORD is!” As for me, I am poor and in need; may the Lord keep me in mind. You are the one who helps me and sets me free; my God, do not be slow!
