Psalms 72

Open Word Bible

Of Solomon. God, grant the king your justice, and the king’s son your righteousness. May he govern your people rightly, and your poor with fairness. May the mountains yield well-being for the people, and the hills bring it through righteousness. May he defend the poor among the people and bring rescue to needy families; may he break the oppressor in pieces. May people stand in awe of you as long as there is a sun and a moon, from one generation to the next. May he be like rain falling on a cut field, like showers soaking the land. In his days may the righteous thrive, and peace overflow until the moon is gone. May his rule stretch from sea to sea, from the River to the far ends of the earth. Let the nomads of the desert kneel before him, and let his foes lick the dust. Let Tarshish and the coastlands send their kings with tribute; let the kings of Sheba and Seba bring him presents. Let every king bow low before him and every nation be his servant. For he rescues the needy when they cry out, and the poor who have no one else to stand by them. He feels for the weak and the needy, and he saves the lives of those in need. He sets them free from cruelty and violence; their lives are of great worth in his sight. May the king live! Let him receive Sheba’s gold; let prayer be made for him always, and blessing asked for him all day. Let grain grow thick across the land, right up to the hilltops; let its harvest rustle like the trees of Lebanon, and let city people spring up like grass in the fields. May his name live on forever, his fame spread as long as the sun shines. May all nations ask to be blessed as he is blessed, and call him happy. Blessed be the LORD God, Israel’s God; only he works wonders. Blessed be his glorious name for all time; may his glory fill all the earth. Amen and Amen. Here end the prayers of David son of Jesse.
