Psalms 105

Open Word Bible

Thank the LORD and call on his name; tell every people what he has done. Sing to him, play and sing his praise; talk of all the wonderful things he has done. Take pride in his holy name; let all who look to the LORD be glad at heart. Turn to the LORD and to his strength; come into his presence again and again. Call to mind the wonders he has worked, his signs, and the verdicts he spoke, you descendants of his servant Abraham, you children of Jacob, the ones he chose. He, the LORD, is our God; his rulings reach the whole earth. He keeps his covenant in mind forever, the promise he laid down for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac, and he set it in place for Jacob as a decree, for Israel as a covenant that lasts forever, saying, “The land of Canaan I give to you, a share marked out for you to inherit.” When they were only a handful of people, a few outsiders living in that land, wandering from one nation to the next, from one kingdom to another people, he let no one do them wrong, and he took kings to task over them: “Do not lay a hand on my anointed ones; do not hurt my prophets.” He summoned a famine over the land and broke off every supply of bread. But he had already sent a man on ahead of them: Joseph, who was sold to be a slave. Shackles bruised his feet, and his neck was locked in iron, until the day his own words came true; the word of the LORD refined him. The king sent orders to free him; the ruler of many peoples let him loose. He put him in charge of his palace and gave him rule over all his wealth, with power to put his officials in chains if he chose, and to make his counselors wise. So Israel came into Egypt, and Jacob settled as a guest in the land of Ham. There he made his people grow greatly in number, until they were too strong for their enemies. He turned the hearts of the Egyptians to hatred of his people and to scheming against his servants. He sent his servant Moses, and with him Aaron, his chosen one. Among the Egyptians they carried out the signs he had spoken of, and wonders throughout the land of Ham. He sent darkness and the land went dark; and they did not defy his word. He made their waters blood and left their fish dead. Frogs swarmed over their land, even into the inner rooms of their kings. At his command came swarms of flies, and gnats covered every part of their land. Instead of rain he gave them hail, with fire flashing across their land. He beat down their grapevines and their fig trees and splintered every tree in their land. At his word the locusts arrived, swarms of young locusts too many to count, and they devoured every green plant in their land and swallowed up the harvest of their fields. And he killed the firstborn of every family in their land, the first sons born of their strength. He brought his people out carrying silver and gold, and in all his tribes not one person stumbled. Egypt was happy to see them go, since fear of them had come over its people. He spread a cloud above them like a screen, and fire to light up the night. When they asked, he sent quail, and he gave them their fill of bread from heaven. He opened up a rock and water streamed out, running like a river through the parched land. For he remembered the holy word he had spoken to Abraham, his servant. So he led his people out rejoicing, his chosen ones singing aloud for joy. He gave them the lands of other nations, and they took over what those peoples had worked for, so that they would keep his decrees and hold fast to his instructions. Praise the LORD!
