Leviticus 9
Open Word Bible
When the eighth day came, Moses called for Aaron and his sons and for the elders of Israel. He told Aaron, “Choose a young calf from the herd as a sin offering for yourself, and a ram as a burnt offering, each without defect, and bring them before the LORD. And say to the Israelites, ‘Bring a male goat for a sin offering, and for a burnt offering a calf and a lamb, year-old animals without defect, and an ox and a ram to be sacrificed before the LORD as a peace offering, and a grain offering mixed with oil. For the LORD will appear to you today.’” So they brought everything Moses had commanded to the area in front of the tent of meeting, and the whole congregation approached and stood there before the LORD. Moses said, “Do this, as the LORD has commanded, and the glory of the LORD will appear to you.” Then Moses told Aaron, “Approach the altar. Offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, and so make atonement for yourself and for the people. Then present the people’s offering and make atonement for them, just as the LORD has commanded.” So Aaron went to the altar and slaughtered the calf for his own sin offering. Aaron’s sons handed him the blood. He dipped his finger in it and put some on the horns of the altar, and he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. Then on the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the LORD had commanded Moses. He burned the meat and the hide in a fire outside the camp. Then Aaron slaughtered the burnt offering. When his sons passed the blood to him, he splashed it on every side of the altar. His sons passed him the pieces of the burnt offering one by one, and the head as well, and he burned it all on the altar. The internal organs and the legs he washed, then burned them on the altar on top of the rest of the burnt offering. After that Aaron brought the people’s offering forward. He took the goat for their sin offering, slaughtered it, and offered it as a sin offering in the same way as the first. He also brought forward the burnt offering and offered it as the rule required. Then he presented the grain offering. He filled his hand with some of it and burned that on the altar, in addition to the morning burnt offering. Next he slaughtered the ox and the ram, the peace offering for the people. When Aaron’s sons passed him the blood, he splashed it on every side of the altar. The fat portions from the ox and the ram, the fat tail, the fat that covers the internal organs, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver, these fat portions they laid on top of the breasts. Then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. As for the breasts and the right thigh, Aaron waved them before the LORD as a wave offering, following Moses’ command. Aaron then held out his hands toward the people and blessed them. And when he had finished presenting the sin offering, the burnt offering and the peace offering, he came down from the altar. Moses and Aaron entered the tent of meeting, and on coming out again they blessed the people. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. Fire went out from before the LORD and devoured the burnt offering and the fat portions lying on the altar. When all the people saw it, they cried out with joy and bowed down with their faces to the ground.
