Leviticus 24
Open Word Bible
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, “Command the Israelites to bring you pure oil from crushed olives to give light, so that a lamp may burn there without fail. Aaron is to set it in order in the tent of meeting, outside the curtain in front of the testimony, so that it burns before the LORD from evening until morning without fail. This is a permanent rule for all your generations. He is to set the lamps in order on the pure gold lampstand before the LORD, without fail.
You are to take fine flour and bake it into twelve loaves. Each loaf is to contain about 4 quarts. Set them out on the pure gold table before the LORD, in two rows with six loaves to a row. Put pure frankincense on each row. It is to be a memorial portion for the bread, a food offering to the LORD. Every Sabbath day he is to set it out before the LORD, without fail. It comes from the Israelites as a covenant that lasts forever. The bread is to go to Aaron and his sons, and they must eat it in a holy place, because it is most holy for him, his permanent share of the food offerings to the LORD.”
A man whose mother was an Israelite and whose father was an Egyptian went out among the Israelites. In the camp he got into a fight with an Israelite man. The Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the Name, uttering curses, and they brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith, Dibri’s daughter, of the tribe of Dan. They held him under guard, waiting for a clear ruling from the LORD.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, “Take the one who cursed outside the camp. Everyone who heard him must lay their hands on his head, and then the whole congregation is to stone him. Say to the Israelites: ‘If anyone curses their God, they will bear the consequences of their sin. Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death. The whole congregation must stone that person. The outsider is no different from the native-born: whoever blasphemes the Name must die. Anyone who strikes and kills another human being must be put to death. Whoever kills an animal belonging to someone else must replace it: life for life. If anyone injures a neighbor, what they did is to be done to them. a broken bone for a broken bone, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. The same injury they caused to someone else is to be caused to them. To kill an animal means paying for it; to kill a person means being put to death. There is to be a single standard of justice for you, the same for outsider and native-born alike, for I am the LORD your God.’” Moses passed this on to the Israelites, and they brought the man who had cursed out of the camp and killed him with stones. The Israelites did exactly what the LORD had commanded Moses.
