Leviticus 7

Open Word Bible

These are the instructions for the guilt offering. It is most holy. The guilt offering is to be slaughtered at the same place as the burnt offering, and the priest is to splash its blood all around on the altar. All its fat is to be offered from it: the fat tail, the fat that covers the internal organs, the two kidneys with the fat on them by the lower back, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be taken out together with the kidneys. The priest is to turn them into smoke on the altar as a food offering to the LORD. It is a guilt offering. Any male of priestly descent may eat it. It must be eaten in a holy place. It is most holy. The guilt offering is like the sin offering: the same rule applies to both. The animal belongs to the priest who makes atonement with it. When a priest offers a burnt offering for someone, the hide of the animal he offered is his to keep. Any grain offering that has been baked in an oven, or prepared in a pan or on a griddle, is to go to the priest who presents it. Every other grain offering, whether mixed with oil or dry, belongs to all of Aaron’s sons, to be shared alike among them.

These are the instructions for the peace offering that someone brings to the LORD. If it is brought to give thanks, the worshiper must also present, with the thanksgiving sacrifice, loaves made without yeast and mixed with oil, wafers made without yeast and spread with oil, and loaves of fine flour well soaked and mixed with oil. With their thanksgiving peace offering they are also to present loaves of bread made with yeast. From each kind of offering they are to present one loaf as a contribution to the LORD. It belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the peace offering. The meat of the peace offering given in thanks is to be eaten the same day it is offered. Nothing of it is to be kept until the next morning. If the sacrifice is offered to fulfill a vow, or as a freewill offering, it is to be eaten on the day it is presented, and the rest may still be eaten the following day. But any meat from the sacrifice still left on the third day must be burned up. Should any meat of the peace offering be eaten on the third day, the one who brought it will not be accepted, and the offering will not count in their favor. It is foul meat, and whoever eats any of it will bear the guilt. If the meat comes into contact with anything unclean, no one may eat it; it must be burned in the fire. Otherwise, the meat may be eaten by anyone who is clean. If anyone who is unclean eats meat from a peace offering that belongs to the LORD, that person must be cut off from the people. If a person has touched anything unclean, such as human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or some unclean detestable creature, and then eats meat from the peace offering that belongs to the LORD, that person must be cut off from the people.’”

The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: ‘You must not eat any fat from cattle, sheep or goats. The fat of an animal that died on its own, or that was torn apart by wild animals, can be put to any use, but you must on no account eat it. If anyone eats fat from an animal of the kind presented to the LORD as a food offering, the one who eats it must be cut off from the people. You must not eat any blood at all, whether from a bird or from an animal, wherever you live. Whoever eats any blood, that person must be cut off from the people.’”

The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: ‘When anyone offers a peace offering to the LORD, they themselves must bring from it a gift for the LORD. The worshiper must carry the LORD’s food offerings in their own hands: the fat, together with the breast. The breast is for waving before the LORD as a wave offering. The fat the priest is to turn into smoke on the altar; the breast goes to Aaron and his sons. From your peace offerings you must also hand over the right thigh as a contribution for the priest. That thigh is the share of whichever of Aaron’s sons offers the blood and the fat of the peace offering. For I have taken the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution from the peace offerings of the Israelites, and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons as their permanent share from the Israelites.’” This is the share of Aaron and his sons from the LORD’s food offerings, from the day they were presented to serve the LORD as priests, which the LORD commanded the Israelites to give them on the day they were anointed. It is a permanent rule for all their generations. These are the instructions for the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering and the peace offering, which the LORD commanded Moses on Mount Sinai at the time he commanded the Israelites, in the wilderness of Sinai, to bring their offerings to the LORD.
