Leviticus 1

Open Word Bible

From the tent of meeting the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him. He said, “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: ‘If one of you brings an animal to the LORD as an offering, it is to come from the herd or from the flock. A burnt offering from the herd must be a male without defect. It is to be brought to the entrance of the tent of meeting, so that the LORD will accept the one who offers it. The worshiper is to lay their hand on the head of the burnt offering, which will then be accepted for them and make atonement for them. The one who brought the young bull is to slaughter it there before the LORD. Aaron’s sons, the priests, are then to present the blood and splash it on every side of the altar that stands at the entrance of the tent of meeting. The worshiper is then to skin the burnt offering and cut it up into its parts. The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and lay wood in order on the fire. Aaron’s sons, the priests, are to set out the pieces on the burning wood of the altar, along with the head and the suet. The internal organs and the legs are to be washed with water, and the priest is to turn the whole animal into smoke on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.

If the animal for the burnt offering comes from the flock, from the sheep or the goats, it must be a male without defect. It is to be slaughtered before the LORD on the north side of the altar, and Aaron’s sons, the priests, are to splash its blood on every side of the altar. It is to be cut into its pieces, and the priest is to set them out, with the head and the suet, on the burning wood of the altar. The internal organs and the legs are to be washed with water. The priest is to present all of it and turn it into smoke on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.

If someone’s burnt offering to the LORD is a bird, they are to bring a turtledove or a young pigeon. The priest is to take it to the altar. He is to nip off its head and turn the head into smoke on the altar, and the bird’s blood is to be squeezed out against the altar’s side. He is to take out its crop along with its feathers and throw it down on the east side of the altar, at the place for the ashes. Taking it by the wings, he is to tear it open but not split it in two. Then the priest is to turn it into smoke on the altar, on the burning wood. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.
