Jesus Christ

Jesus is the heart of the whole Bible — the Word made flesh, the Lamb who was slain, the risen Lord who holds the keys of death. In him all the fullness of God dwells, and through him we are reconciled to the Father. These verses trace his person, his cross, his resurrection, and the new life found in him alone.

The Person of Christ

The Incarnation — John 1:14

The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Fully God and Fully Man — Colossians 2:9

For in him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily,

The Word (Logos) — John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Emmanuel — Matthew 1:23

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel”; which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”

The Son of God — John 20:31

but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

The Image of God — Colossians 1:15

who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

The Firstborn over Creation — Colossians 1:16

For by him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and for him.

The Radiance of God's Glory — Hebrews 1:3

His Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purified us of our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

The Bread of Life — John 6:35

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

The Light of the World — John 8:12

Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The Alpha and Omega — Revelation 22:13

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

The Author of Life — Acts 3:15

and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, to which we are witnesses.

The Way, the Truth, the Life — John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

The Cross & Atonement

The Cross — 1 Corinthians 1:18

For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are saved it is the power of God.

The Blood of Christ — 1 Peter 1:18-19

knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, but with precious blood, as of a faultless and pure lamb, the blood of Christ;

The Lamb of God — John 1:29

The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Sacrifice — Hebrews 9:14

how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without defect to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Redemption — Ephesians 1:7

in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

It Is Finished — John 19:30

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

He Bore Our Sins — Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

The Suffering Servant — Isaiah 53:3

He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.

Reconciliation — 2 Corinthians 5:18

But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation;

Wrath Removed — Romans 3:25

whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;

Crucified for Us — Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

The Curse Removed — Galatians 3:13

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”

The Resurrection & Victory Over Death

The Resurrection — 1 Corinthians 15:20

But now Christ has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruits of those who are asleep.

The Empty Tomb — Luke 24:6

He isn’t here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee,

Victory Over Death — 1 Corinthians 15:55

“Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?”

Risen with Christ — Colossians 3:1

If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God.

Death Defeated — 2 Timothy 1:10

but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News.

He Lives — Revelation 1:18

and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever more. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.

Firstfruits — 1 Corinthians 15:23

But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then those who are Christ’s, at his coming.

The Power of His Resurrection — Philippians 3:10

that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death;

Raised to New Life — Romans 6:4

We were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just like Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

Because He Lives — John 14:19

Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.

The Resurrection and the Life — John 11:25

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

Christ Our Shepherd, Priest & King

The Good Shepherd — John 10:11

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Our High Priest — Hebrews 4:14

Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.

King of Kings — Revelation 19:16

He has on his garment and on his thigh a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

The Mediator — 1 Timothy 2:5

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

Lordship of Christ — Philippians 2:9-11

Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name; that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Name of Jesus — Acts 4:12

Our Advocate — 1 John 2:1

The Great Shepherd — Hebrews 13:20

The Head of the Church — Colossians 1:18

He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Life & Union in Christ

In Christ — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

Abiding in Christ — John 15:5

I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

The Vine and Branches — John 15:4

Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.

Christ in You — Colossians 1:27

to whom God was pleased to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory;

Following Jesus — Luke 9:23

He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

Hidden with Christ — Colossians 3:3

For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

One with Christ — 1 Corinthians 6:17

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.

Bearing Fruit — John 15:8

“In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.

Putting On Christ — Romans 13:14

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts.

Alive in Christ — Ephesians 2:5

even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

Remain in My Love — John 15:9

Complete in Christ — Colossians 2:10
