The Cross & Atonement

At the cross Jesus bore our sins, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. It is finished — the debt paid, the wrath removed, the way to God opened. These verses dwell on the love that redeemed us by his blood.

The Cross — 1 Corinthians 1:18

For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are saved it is the power of God.

The Blood of Christ — 1 Peter 1:18-19

knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, but with precious blood, as of a faultless and pure lamb, the blood of Christ;

The Lamb of God — John 1:29

The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Sacrifice — Hebrews 9:14

how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without defect to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Redemption — Ephesians 1:7

in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

It Is Finished — John 19:30

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

He Bore Our Sins — Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

The Suffering Servant — Isaiah 53:3

He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.

Reconciliation — 2 Corinthians 5:18

But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation;

Wrath Removed — Romans 3:25

whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;

Crucified for Us — Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

The Curse Removed — Galatians 3:13

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”
