Sin & the Fight Against It

Sin is real and serious, but its power is broken for those who are in Christ. By the Spirit we put it to death and walk in freedom, finding grace to help in time of need. These verses arm you for the daily fight and point you to the One who has overcome.

Sin — Romans 3:23

for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

The Flesh — Galatians 5:16

Temptation — 1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Pride — Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Lust — Matthew 5:28

but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Greed — Luke 12:15

He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”

Idolatry — 1 John 5:21

Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Bitterness — Hebrews 12:15

looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it;

Envy — James 3:16

For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

Overcoming Sin — Romans 6:14

For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace.

Putting Off the Old Self — Ephesians 4:22-24

that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit; and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

Fleeing Sin — 2 Timothy 2:22

Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Resisting the Devil — James 4:7

Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

No Longer Slaves to Sin — Romans 6:6
