On the day Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, when he had anointed and consecrated it and all its furnishings, and had anointed and consecrated the altar and all its utensils, the leaders of Israel, the heads of their ancestral families, brought offerings. They were the leaders of the tribes, the men who had been in charge of those who were counted. They brought their offering before the LORD: six covered carts and twelve oxen, one cart for every two leaders and an ox from each one. They presented them in front of the tabernacle. The LORD said to Moses, “Accept these from them, so that they may be used for the work of the tent of meeting. Give them to the Levites, to each as his work requires.” So Moses took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. He gave two carts and four oxen to the Gershonites, as their work required. And he gave four carts and eight oxen to the Merarites, as their work required. They were under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. But he gave none to the Kohathites, because they were responsible for the holy things, which they carried on their shoulders. The leaders also brought offerings for the dedication of the altar at the time it was anointed. They presented their offerings in front of the altar.
