After the plague, “Take a census of the whole congregation of the Israelites by their ancestral families, all the men in Israel twenty years old and up, everyone who can go out to war.” So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with the people on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. They said, “Count the men twenty years old and up,” as the LORD had commanded Moses. These were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt: Reuben was Israel’s firstborn. The descendants of Reuben were: from Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; from Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; from Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; and from Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said, “The land is to be divided among these as their inheritance, according to the number of names. To a large tribe you are to give a larger inheritance, and to a small tribe a smaller one. Each is to be given its inheritance according to the number of those enrolled in it. But the land is to be divided by lot. They are to receive their inheritance by the names of their ancestral tribes. Each inheritance is to be divided by lot between the larger and the smaller tribes.”

The Levites enrolled numbered 23,000, every male one month old and up. They were not enrolled with the other Israelites, because they were given no inheritance among them. Among them there was not one man of those enrolled by Moses and Aaron the priest when they enrolled the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai. For the LORD had said of them, “They will certainly die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
