Numbers

Old Testament · 36 chapters

Forty years in the wilderness between Sinai and the edge of the promised land.

About Numbers

Numbers takes its name from the two censuses that frame it, but its subject is the journey between them. Israel leaves Sinai, refuses to enter the land after the spies’ report, and spends a generation in the wilderness. Alongside the failures are moments of striking grace — the priestly blessing of chapter six, water from the rock, the bronze serpent — and the book ends with a new generation poised on the far bank of the Jordan.
