Job 5
Open Word Bible
Call out, then; is there anyone who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? For resentment kills the fool, and envy slays the simple. I myself have seen a fool putting down roots, but suddenly I declared his home cursed. His children are far from safety; they are crushed in the court at the gate, with no one to rescue them. The hungry eat up his harvest, taking it even from among the thorns, and a trap lies open for their wealth. Hardship does not spring up from the dust, and trouble does not sprout from the soil. No, human beings are born to trouble, as sparks fly upward. But as for me, I would turn to God and lay my case before God. He does great things beyond understanding, wonders that cannot be counted. He gives rain to the earth and sends water on the fields. He sets the lowly on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. He thwarts the schemes of the crafty, so that their hands achieve nothing. He catches the wise in their own cunning, and the schemes of the devious are swept away. In the daytime they run into darkness, and at noon they grope as if it were night. But he saves the needy from the sword of their mouths and from the grip of the powerful. So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth. How blessed is the one whom God corrects! So do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. For he wounds, but he also binds up; he strikes, but his hands heal. He will rescue you from six troubles; in seven, no harm will touch you. In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword. You will be sheltered from the lash of the tongue, and you will not fear destruction when it comes. You will laugh at destruction and hunger, and you need not fear the wild animals of the earth. For you will be in covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you. You will know that your home is secure; you will look over your property and find nothing missing. You will know that your offspring will be many, your descendants like the grass of the earth. You will come to your grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in at harvest time. We have looked into all this, and it is true. So hear it and know it for your own good.
