Job 4

Open Word Bible

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered: If someone dares to say a word to you, will you lose patience? Yet who can keep from speaking? Think how you have taught many and strengthened hands that hung limp. Your words have lifted up those who stumbled, and you have made firm the knees that were giving way. But now it has come to you, and you lose patience; it strikes you, and you are terrified. Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? Think back now: who that was innocent has ever perished? Where have the upright been wiped out? As I have seen, those who plow evil and sow trouble harvest the same. At the breath of God they perish; by the blast of his anger they are finished. The lion may roar and the fierce lion growl, but the teeth of the young lions are broken. The strong lion dies for lack of prey, and the lioness’s cubs are scattered. A word was brought to me in secret; my ear caught only a whisper of it. amid troubled thoughts from visions in the night, when deep sleep falls on people, fear and trembling came upon me and made all my bones shake. Then a spirit glided past my face; the hair on my body stood on end. It stood still, but I could not make out what it looked like. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, and then I heard a voice: Can a mortal be righteous before God? Can anyone be pure before their Maker? Even in his servants he puts no trust, and he charges his angels with error, how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like a moth! Between morning and evening they are shattered; unnoticed, they perish forever. Is not the cord of their tent pulled up? They die, and without wisdom.
