Job 41

Open Word Bible

Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook? Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak gently to you? Will it make a covenant with you for you to take it as your slave for life? Will you play with it as with a pet bird or put it on a leash for your young girls? Will traders bargain over it? Will they divide it up among the merchants? Can you fill its hide with harpoons or its head with fishing spears? Just lay a hand on it, and you will remember the fight and never do it again.

Any hope of overpowering it is false; the mere sight of it lays a person low. No one is fierce enough to stir it up; who then can stand up to me? Who has first given to me, that I should pay them back? Everything under the whole heaven is mine. I will not keep silent about its limbs, its mighty strength and its fine build. Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can come at it with a double bridle? Who can pry open the doors of its face? Its teeth all around are a terror. Its pride is its rows of shields, shut together as with a tight seal. Each one is so close to the next that no air can pass between them. They are joined one to another; they cling together and cannot be pulled apart. Its snorting makes light flash out, and its eyes are like the first rays of dawn. Flaming torches pour from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a pot fanned to a boil over burning reeds. Its breath sets coals on fire, and flames dart from its mouth. Strength makes its home in its neck, and terror dances before it. The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are set firm on it and do not move. Its heart is as hard as rock, as hard as a lower millstone. When it raises itself up, the mighty are afraid; at its crashing they are thrown into confusion. A sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does a spear, a dart, or a javelin. It treats iron like straw and bronze like rotten wood. Arrows do not make it run away; sling stones are like chaff to it. A club seems like chaff to it, and it laughs at the rattle of a javelin. Its underside is like jagged pieces of pottery; it leaves a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. It makes the depths churn like a boiling pot; it stirs up the sea like a pot of perfumed oil. It leaves a shining wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair. Nothing on earth is its equal, a creature made without fear. It looks down on everything that is lofty; it is king over all the proud beasts.
