Someone without self-control is a city breached, left with no walls.

Every competitor holds back from many things in training. They accept this to win a wreath that soon withers; we, to win one that never decays.

It teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly desires, and to live self-controlled, righteous and godly lives in this present age,

knowledge self-control, self-control endurance, endurance godliness,

Patience is worth more than a warrior’s strength, and self-control more than conquering a city.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and love and sound judgment.
