Ezekiel 28

Open Word Bible

The word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, The Lord GOD says this: You are proud at heart, and you have claimed, “I am a god! I sit on the throne of the gods in the heart of the seas.” Yet you are a mortal and not a god, though you count your mind equal to the mind of a god. You are indeed wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you! By your wisdom and understanding you have won wealth for yourself and filled your treasuries with gold and silver. By your great skill in trading you have multiplied your wealth, and your wealth has made your heart proud.

Therefore the Lord GOD says this: Because you count your mind equal to the mind of a god, therefore I am bringing foreigners against you, the most ruthless of nations. They will bare their swords against all that your wisdom made beautiful, and they will defile your splendor. They will thrust you down into the pit, and you will be slain and die in the heart of the seas. Will you still say, “I am a god,” when you face the one who kills you? You will be only a mortal, not a god, in the hands of those who strike you down. At the hands of foreigners you will die the death of the uncircumcised, for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD.

Then the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, raise a lament over the king of Tyre and say to him, The Lord GOD says this: You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; you were clothed in every precious stone: carnelian, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl, and gold. Your settings and mountings were crafted for you; on the day you were created they were made ready. You were an anointed guardian cherub; I placed you there. You were on God’s holy mountain; you walked among the stones of fire. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, until wickedness was found in you. Through your vast trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I threw you in disgrace from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, guardian cherub, removing you from among the stones of fire. Your heart grew proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I threw you to the ground; I made you a spectacle before kings. By your many sins, by the dishonesty of your trade, you defiled your sanctuaries. So I brought fire out from within you, and it devoured you; I turned you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching. All among the peoples who knew you are appalled at your fate; you have come to a terrifying end, and you will be no more forever.

Then the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, turn to face Sidon and prophesy against her, and say, The Lord GOD says this: I am against you, Sidon, and I will show my glory within you. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I carry out judgments on her and show myself holy in her. I will send plague into her and bloodshed into her streets. The slain will fall within her, struck by the sword that comes against her from every side. Then they will know that I am the LORD. The house of Israel will no longer have neighbors who treat them with contempt and hurt them like a pricking brier or a painful thorn. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.

The Lord GOD says this: When I gather the house of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will display my holiness among them as the nations look on. Then they will live in their own land, the land I gave to my servant Jacob. They will live there in safety; they will build houses and plant vineyards. They will live in safety when I carry out judgments on all their neighbors who despise them. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.
