What Psalm 46:1 means
The psalm opens by naming three things at once: a refuge to run to, strength for standing, and — the phrase that carries the weight — help that is *present*. Not help that arrives eventually, but help already here in the trouble.
What follows is deliberately extreme: mountains falling into the sea, waters roaring. The point is that the worst imaginable upheaval does not change the first line. Memorising this verse gives you something solid to say in the moment the ground moves, before you can think clearly enough to pray anything longer.
