Prayer & the Word

God has given his people two great means of communion with him: he speaks to us in his Word, and we speak to him in prayer and praise. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. These verses kindle a life of prayer, worship, and wisdom drawn from Scripture.

Prayer

Prayer — Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

Intercession — 1 Timothy 2:1

I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men:

Persistence in Prayer — Luke 18:1

He also spoke a parable to them that they must always pray, and not give up,

Praying Scripture — John 15:7

If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

Crying Out to God — Psalms 34:17

The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

Lament — Psalms 13:1

How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

Boldness in Prayer — Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

Ask, Seek, Knock — Matthew 7:7

“Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.

Pray Without Ceasing — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Pray without ceasing.

The Prayer of Faith — James 5:15

and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Praying in the Spirit — Jude 1:20

But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.

Effective Prayer — James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

When You Pray — Matthew 6:6

But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Agreeing in Prayer — Matthew 18:19

Again, assuredly I tell you, that if two of you will agree on earth concerning anything that they will ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.

Worship & Praise

Worship — John 4:24

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Praise — Psalms 150:6

Let everything that has breath praise Yah! Praise Yah!

Thanksgiving — Psalms 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

Adoration — Psalms 95:6

Oh come, let’s worship and bow down. Let’s kneel before Yahweh, our Maker,

Singing to God — Psalms 96:1

Sing to Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth.

Reverence — Hebrews 12:28

Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken, let us have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,

A Heart of Gratitude — Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.

Worship in Spirit and Truth — John 4:23

But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers.

Bless the Lord — Psalms 103:1

Praise Yahweh, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name!

Make a Joyful Noise — Psalms 100:1

Shout for joy to Yahweh, all you lands!

Lift Up Your Hands — Psalms 134:2

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary. Praise Yahweh!

The Sacrifice of Praise — Hebrews 13:15

Through him, then, let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.

Praise Him in the Heights — Psalms 148:1

Praise Yah! Praise Yahweh from the heavens! Praise him in the heights!

The Word of God

Scripture — 2 Timothy 3:16

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness,

Hiding the Word in the Heart — Psalms 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

The Power of the Word — Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Meditating on the Word — Joshua 1:8

This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.

Standing on the Word — Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

A Lamp to My Feet — Psalms 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

The Word Endures Forever — Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God stands forever.”

Sweeter Than Honey — Psalms 119:103

How sweet are your promises to my taste, more than honey to my mouth!

Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone — Matthew 4:4

But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

Desire the Pure Milk — 1 Peter 2:2

as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow,

The Seed of the Word — Luke 8:11

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Wisdom & Discernment

Wisdom — James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

Discernment — Hebrews 5:14

But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

Understanding — Proverbs 3:13

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding.

Counsel — Proverbs 11:14

Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.

Decision Making — Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps.

Guidance — Psalms 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

God's Will — Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Knowledge — Proverbs 1:7

The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

Wisdom from Above — James 3:17

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Get Wisdom — Proverbs 4:7

Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

Trust, Don't Lean — Proverbs 3:5

Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.

Testing Everything — 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.

Walk in Wisdom — Colossians 4:5

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
