Genesis 39

Open Word Bible

Meanwhile Joseph had been carried down to Egypt. The Ishmaelites who brought him there sold him to Potiphar, an Egyptian who served Pharaoh as a court officer and commanded his guard. The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man while he served in the house of the Egyptian, his master. His master noticed that the LORD was with him, and that whatever Joseph undertook, the LORD made it turn out well. Joseph won his master’s approval and waited on him personally. Then his master made him overseer of his household and handed over to him everything he possessed. As soon as Joseph had charge of the house and of all the Egyptian owned, the LORD blessed that household on Joseph’s account. Whatever the man had, at home or in the fields, the LORD’s blessing rested on it. So the Egyptian left everything he owned in Joseph’s hands. Having Joseph, he gave no thought to anything but the food he ate. Joseph had a fine figure and a handsome face. Some time later his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph. “Sleep with me,” she said. He refused. “You see,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master gives no thought to what goes on in the house. He has put everything he owns under my care. He does not rank above me in this house. The only thing he has denied me is you, since you are his wife. How could I commit so great a wrong, and sin against God?” She urged Joseph day after day, but he would not listen to her or agree to lie beside her or be in her company. But one day, as Joseph came into the house to see to his work, with none of the men of the household there inside, she seized hold of his garment. “Sleep with me!” she said. But he ran from her and got outside, leaving the garment in her grip. When she saw that he had run outside and left his garment in her hand, she summoned the men of her household and said to them, “See here! He has brought in a Hebrew to toy with us. The man came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed at the top of my voice. Hearing me raise my voice and shout, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.” She put the garment down beside her and waited for Joseph’s master to come home. Then she repeated it all to him: “The Hebrew slave whom you brought among us came in to me, to make a plaything of me. But as I raised my voice and cried out, he abandoned his garment beside me and fled outside.” Joseph’s master listened to his wife telling him, “That is what your slave did to me,” and he flew into a rage. He had Joseph taken and locked up in the prison house used for the king’s prisoners, and there Joseph remained. But the LORD was with Joseph. He treated him with loyal kindness and won him the favor of the prison warden. The warden handed over to Joseph the care of every prisoner in the place, and Joseph directed all the work that was done there. The warden never looked into anything entrusted to Joseph, for the LORD was with him, and whatever Joseph did, the LORD made it succeed.
