Genesis 36
Open Word Bible
This is the account of the family of Esau, that is, Edom. Esau married women of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite, and Basemath daughter of Ishmael, Nebaioth’s sister. Adah bore Esau a son, Eliphaz, and Basemath bore Reuel. Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were Esau’s sons, born to him in the land of Canaan. Esau took his wives, his sons and daughters, everyone in his household, his herds and all his animals, and all the goods he had gained in Canaan, and went away to another land, apart from his brother Jacob. They had too much wealth to live side by side; the land where they were living as foreigners could not feed all their herds. So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. Esau is Edom. This is the account of the family of Esau, ancestor of the Edomites, in the hill country of Seir. These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz, son of Esau’s wife Adah, and Reuel, son of Esau’s wife Basemath. The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz. Timna, a concubine of Esau’s son Eliphaz, bore him Amalek. These were the descendants of Esau’s wife Adah. The sons of Reuel were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the descendants of Esau’s wife Basemath. The sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah, daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon, were Jeush, Jalam and Korah, whom she bore to Esau. These were the clan chiefs among Esau’s descendants. From the sons of Eliphaz, Esau’s firstborn, came the chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, Korah, Gatam and Amalek. These were the chiefs descended from Eliphaz in the land of Edom, the descendants of Adah. From the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son, came the chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the chiefs descended from Reuel in the land of Edom, the descendants of Esau’s wife Basemath. From the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah came the chiefs Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were the chiefs descended from Esau’s wife Oholibamah, Anah’s daughter. These are the sons of Esau, that is, Edom, and these are their chiefs.
These were the sons of Seir the Horite, the people who already lived in the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. The sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam, and Lotan’s sister was Timna. The sons of Shobal were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam. The sons of Zibeon were Aiah and Anah. This was the Anah who discovered the hot springs in the wilderness while he was grazing his father Zibeon’s donkeys. The children of Anah were Dishon and Oholibamah, Anah’s daughter. The sons of Dishon were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Cheran. The sons of Ezer were Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan. The sons of Dishan were Uz and Aran. These were the Horite chiefs: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs, clan by clan, in the land of Seir.
These are the kings who ruled in Edom before any king ruled over the people of Israel: Bela son of Beor was king in Edom; his city was named Dinhabah. When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah, from Bozrah, became king in his place. When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites became king in his place. When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who beat the Midianites in battle in the land of Moab, became king in his place. His city was named Avith. When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah became king in his place. When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the River became king in his place. When Shaul died, Baal-hanan son of Achbor became king in his place. When Baal-hanan son of Achbor died, Hadar became king in his place. His city was named Pau, and his wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred and granddaughter of Mezahab. These are the names of the chiefs descended from Esau, listed by clan and region, each by name: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, Magdiel and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, by their settlements in the land they held. This was Esau, ancestor of the Edomites.
