1 Chronicles 9

Open Word Bible

All Israel was enrolled by genealogies, and these are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. Judah was taken into exile to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.

The first to settle again on their own property in their towns were Israelites, priests, Levites and temple servants. Some of the descendants of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem: From Judah: Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, a descendant of Perez son of Judah. From the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn and his sons. From the descendants of Zerah: Jeuel. Their relatives numbered 690. From the descendants of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah, Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah, and their relatives, listed by their family records, numbered 956. All these men were heads of families in their ancestral houses.

From the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the chief officer of the house of God,

Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah; Maasai son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer; and their relatives, heads of their ancestral families, 1,760 in all. They were very capable men for the work of serving in the house of God. From the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, a descendant of Merari; Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal; Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph; Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun; and Berechiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites. The gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon and Ahiman. Their kinsman Shallum was the chief, and to this day he is stationed at the King’s Gate on the east. These were the gatekeepers of the camps of the Levites. Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his relatives from his father’s family, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service as keepers of the thresholds of the tent, just as their ancestors had been in charge of the camp of the LORD as keepers of the entrance. Phinehas son of Eleazar had been in charge of them in earlier times, and the LORD was with him. Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting. All those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered 212. They were enrolled by genealogy in their villages. It was David and Samuel the seer who had placed them in these posts of trust. So they and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the LORD, the house that was the tent. The gatekeepers were on all four sides: east, west, north and south. Their relatives in their villages had to come in from time to time to serve with them for seven days. For the four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, held a permanent position of trust. They were in charge of the rooms and the treasuries of the house of God. They spent the night stationed around the house of God, because they had the duty of guarding it, and they were in charge of the key for opening it every morning. Some of them were in charge of the utensils used in the service; they counted them when they brought them in and when they took them out. Others were appointed over the furnishings and all the holy utensils of the sanctuary, and over the fine flour, wine, oil, frankincense and spices. But some of the priests prepared the blend of the spices. Mattithiah, one of the Levites and the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the flat cakes. Some of their relatives, the Kohathites, were in charge of the bread set out in rows, preparing it every Sabbath.

These are the singers, heads of Levite families, who stayed in the temple rooms and were excused from other tasks, because they were at their work day and night. These were heads of Levite families, leaders listed in their family records, and they lived in Jerusalem.

Jeiel the father of Gibeon lived in Gibeon, and his wife’s name was Maacah. His firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah and Mikloth. Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They also lived near their relatives in Jerusalem, alongside their kinsmen.

Ner was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul, and Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab and Esh-baal. The son of Jonathan was Merib-baal, and Merib-baal was the father of Micah. The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech and Tahrea. Ahaz was the father of Jarah, Jarah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth and Zimri, and Zimri was the father of Moza. Moza was the father of Binea; Binea’s son was Rephaiah, his son Eleasah, and his son Azel. Azel had six sons, whose names were Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah and Hanan. These were Azel’s sons.
