James calls believers to yield to God and stand firm against the devil, who will then run from them.

What James 4:7 means
The order is not accidental. Submission comes first, resistance second — resisting on your own authority is a different and much weaker proposition than resisting from under God’s.
James is characteristically blunt and practical: two imperatives, one promise. And the promise is active — he will flee. The next verse (James 4:8) completes the movement with ‘Draw close to God, and He will draw close to you’, which is worth learning alongside it.
