James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

What James 4:7 means
The order is not accidental. Submission comes first, resistance second — resisting on your own authority is a different and much weaker proposition than resisting from under God’s.
James is characteristically blunt and practical: two imperatives, one promise. And the promise is active — he will flee. The next verse completes the movement with ‘draw near to God, and he will draw near to you’, which is worth learning alongside it.
