No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man — God will provide the way of escape.
No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

The promise is not that temptation stops, nor that resisting is easy, but that it is never actually inescapable. Paul writes this to a church failing in exactly these areas, which is what keeps it from sounding naive.
