What Hebrews 11:1 means
This is Scripture’s closest thing to a definition of faith, and it is notably not about feeling certain. Assurance and conviction are words about substance — faith treats the unseen as real because of who promised it.
The whole chapter then illustrates it with people who died without receiving what was promised and trusted anyway. That context keeps the definition honest: faith here is not confidence that things will go well, but confidence in God when they have not yet.
