Proverbs 10
Open Word Bible
The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son is his father’s joy, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother. Wealth gained by wickedness does no good in the end, but righteousness rescues from death. The LORD will not leave the righteous to starve, but he pushes away what the wicked crave. A slack hand leads to poverty, but hard-working hands bring wealth. A son who gathers the crops in summer is wise; a son who sleeps through harvest brings disgrace. The righteous wear blessings like a crown, but violence lies hidden behind the words of the wicked. The righteous are remembered with blessing, but the name of the wicked decays. The wise in heart accept instruction, but a fool who keeps talking will come to ruin. Whoever lives honestly walks without fear, but the one who takes crooked roads will be exposed. Someone who winks with the eye causes trouble, and a fool who keeps talking will come to ruin. What the righteous say is a spring of life, but behind the words of the wicked lies violence. Hatred starts fights, but love draws a veil over every wrong. Wisdom is found on the lips of a person of understanding, but the rod is for the back of one with no sense. The wise keep knowledge in store, but a fool’s mouth invites ruin. A rich person’s wealth is a fortified city; poverty is what ruins the poor. What the righteous earn leads to life; what the wicked gain leads to sin. Whoever holds on to discipline is on the road to life, but whoever rejects correction leads others astray. Hiding hatred makes for lying lips, and spreading slander makes a fool. Where there are many words, wrongdoing is never far away, but whoever holds back their words is wise. The tongue of the righteous is pure silver; the heart of the wicked is worth very little. The words of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense. It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich, and hard work adds nothing to it. Doing wrong is a game to a fool, but a person of understanding delights in wisdom. What the wicked dread is what will happen to them, but what the righteous long for will be given to them. When the whirlwind has passed through, the wicked are gone, but the righteous have a foundation that lasts forever. Like vinegar on the teeth or smoke in the eyes is a lazy messenger to those who send him. The fear of the LORD lengthens life, but the years of the wicked are cut off early. What the righteous hope for ends in joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing. For those with integrity the way of the LORD is a refuge, but for evildoers it is ruin. The righteous will never be moved, but the wicked will not remain in the land. Wisdom grows from the mouth of the righteous like fruit, but a twisted tongue will be cut out. The righteous know how to say what is pleasing, but the wicked speak only what is twisted.
