Hebrews 2
Open Word Bible
This is why we must give even greater attention to the things we have heard, so that we do not drift off. For if the word that was spoken through angels held good, and every breach of it and every refusal to listen met with the penalty it deserved, how will we escape if we pay no attention to a salvation as great as this? The Lord was the first to speak of it, and it was made certain to us by those who had listened to him, while God added his own testimony by signs and wonders, by many kinds of mighty works, and by sharing out the Holy Spirit as he chose. For God did not place the world to come, the world we are talking about, under the rule of angels. But there is a place where someone has testified, “What is a human being, that you remember him, or a mortal, that you watch over him? You made him a little lower than the angels; with glory and honor you crowned him, and you put all things in subjection under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But as it is, we do not yet see all things put under him. But Jesus we do see. For a little while he was placed lower than the angels, and because of the death he suffered he has been crowned with glory and honor, so that apart from God he should taste death on behalf of everyone.
For God, for whose sake everything exists and through whom everything exists, was bringing many children to glory, and so it was right for him to bring to perfection through sufferings the pioneer who leads them to salvation. For the one who makes holy and those who are being made holy all come from one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says, “I will make your name known to my brothers and sisters; in the middle of the assembly I will sing your praise.” And again, “I will go on trusting in him.” And again, “Here I am, with the children God has given me.”
Since the children, then, share a common life of flesh and blood, he himself took on that same life in the same way, so that by his death he might strip of power the one who holds the power of death, the devil, and release those whom the fear of death kept enslaved their whole life long. For it is clear that he does not take hold of angels to help them; it is Abraham’s descendants that he takes hold of. That is why it was necessary for him to become like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in all that has to do with God, making atonement for the sins of the people. Having suffered himself in being tested, he is able to come to the aid of those who are being tested.
