James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
What James 1:5 means
The condition is refreshingly low: if any of you lacks wisdom — which James clearly assumes is everyone, himself included. The instruction that follows is equally plain. Not earn it, not deserve it, not work it out alone: ask.
Two phrases remove the usual hesitations. God gives *generously*, so the supply is not rationed; and *without reproach*, so he does not first make you feel foolish for needing it. James places this right after talking about trials, where wisdom is most urgently needed and least obvious.
