Joshua 13

Open Word Bible

Joshua had now grown old, far along in years. The LORD said to him, “You have grown old and are far along in years, and very much of the land still remains to be taken. This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and all the land of the Geshurites, from the Shihor east of Egypt as far north as the border of Ekron, which is counted as Canaanite land. There are the five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron, and there are the Avvim, from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek and the border of the Amorites; and the land of the Gebalites, and the whole of Lebanon toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath; all who live in the hill country from Lebanon as far as Misrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians. I am the one who will drive them out before the Israelites. Only allot the land to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you. So now divide this land as an inheritance for the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.” With the other half of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites had received their inheritance, which Moses gave them east of the Jordan, as Moses the servant of the LORD had assigned it to them, from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and the town in the middle of the valley, and all the plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon, and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, up to the Ammonite border, and Gilead, and the territory of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. He was one of the last survivors of the Rephaim. Moses defeated them and drove them out. But the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites and the Maacathites, so Geshur and Maacath live among Israel to this day. Only to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance. The food offerings of the LORD, the God of Israel, are its inheritance, as he promised it.

Moses gave land to the tribe of the descendants of Reuben, clan by clan. Their territory ran from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, with the town in the middle of the valley and all the plateau by Medeba, Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau: Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon, Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley, Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth, all the towns of the plateau, and the whole kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the leaders of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the princes allied with Sihon who lived in the land. The Israelites also killed Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination, with the sword, along with the others they killed. The Jordan and its banks formed the border of the Reubenites. This was the inheritance of the descendants of Reuben, clan by clan, the towns and their villages.

Moses gave land to the tribe of Gad, to the descendants of Gad, clan by clan. Their territory was Jazer and all the towns of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, up to Aroer east of Rabbah, and from Heshbon up to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim up to the border of Debir, and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth and Zaphon, what remained of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border up to the end of the Sea of Chinnereth, on the east side of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the descendants of Gad, clan by clan, the towns and their villages. Moses gave land to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It belonged to half the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh, clan by clan. Their territory reached from Mahanaim through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, with all the villages of Jair in Bashan, sixty towns, and half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal towns of Og in Bashan. These were given to the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, to half of the descendants of Machir, clan by clan. These are the inheritances Moses gave out in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho, to the east.

But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he promised them.
