Bible Verses to Memorize for Lent and Easter

Lent and Easter walk the same road the gospel does: down into repentance and the cross, then up into resurrection and life. Memorizing along that road is a fitting Lenten discipline — not one more thing to give up, but something to take on: a verse for the wilderness weeks, and a verse ready to shout on Easter morning.

These are gathered in the order the season travels — repentance, the cross, and then the empty tomb — so you can learn them as the weeks turn toward Easter.

For Lent: repentance and the cross

  • Psalm 51:10 — “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” The Lenten prayer.
  • Joel 2:13 — “rend your heart, and not your garments.”
  • Isaiah 53:5 — “he was wounded for our transgressions… with his stripes we are healed.”
  • Isaiah 53:6 — “the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
  • Luke 9:23 — deny yourself, take up your cross daily.
  • Galatians 2:20 — “I am crucified with Christ.”

Good Friday

  • John 19:30 — “It is finished.” Three words to hold in silence.
  • Romans 5:8 — God commended his love, in that Christ died for us.
  • 1 Peter 2:24 — He bore our sins in his own body on the tree.

For Easter: resurrection and life

  • Luke 24:6 — “He is not here, but is risen.”
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 — Christ died, was buried, and rose the third day, according to the Scriptures. The gospel's core, worth having exact.
  • John 11:25 — “I am the resurrection, and the life.”
  • Romans 6:4 — buried with him… raised to walk in newness of life.
  • 1 Peter 1:3 — begotten again unto a living hope by the resurrection.
  • Revelation 1:18 — “I am he that liveth, and was dead… and have the keys of hell and of death.”

Walking the road

A simple plan: take a Lenten verse for the quiet weeks — Psalm 51:10 or Isaiah 53:5 — and add an Easter verse in Holy Week, so 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 or Luke 24:6 is on your lips when the day comes. To carry from ashes to Alleluia a verse you have truly hidden in the heart is to feel the season's turn from the inside.
