Bible Verses About Hope to Hold Onto

Biblical hope is not wishing; it is waiting on a certainty that hasn't arrived yet. That is why it survives bad news — it is anchored outside the news. And that is why it is worth memorizing: hope keeps best when its reasons are already in the heart, ready to answer the hour that asks whether there is any point in going on.

Here are the verses to hold — the ground hope stands on, the anchor it drops, the strength it lends to waiting, and the horizon it fixes on. Any one of them is a good place to begin.

The ground of hope

• Romans 15:13 — the God of hope fill you with joy and peace in believing.
• 1 Peter 1:3 — a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus.
• Psalm 62:5 — “my expectation is from him.”
• Jeremiah 29:11 — plans of peace, to give you a future and a hope.

Hope that anchors

• Hebrews 6:19 — hope as an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast.
• Romans 5:5 — hope does not disappoint, because of the love poured in.
• Lamentations 3:24 — “The Lord is my portion… therefore will I hope in him.”
• Psalm 42:11 — “hope thou in God” — spoken to one's own downcast soul.

Strength for the waiting

• Isaiah 40:31 — they that wait on the Lord renew their strength.
• Psalm 27:14 — “Wait on the Lord… and he shall strengthen thine heart.”
• Psalm 130:5 — “in his word do I hope.”
• Romans 8:24–25 — if we hope for what we don't see, we wait with patience.

The horizon

• Titus 2:13 — looking for that blessed hope.
• 1 Peter 1:4 — an inheritance incorruptible, reserved for you.
• Revelation 21:4 — He shall wipe away every tear; the last word.
• 1 Corinthians 15:19 — a hope that reaches past this life only.
