Nehemiah 11
Open Word Bible
The officials of the people settled in Jerusalem. The rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine stayed in the other towns. The people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
These are the leaders of the province who lived in Jerusalem. In the towns of Judah lived the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants and the descendants of Solomon’s servants, every family on its own property in their towns. Some of the descendants of Judah and some of the descendants of Benjamin lived in Jerusalem. From the descendants of Judah: Athaiah son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel, a descendant of Perez; and Maaseiah son of Baruch, son of Col-Hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, a descendant of the Shilonite. All the descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were 468 able men.
These are the descendants of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah; and after him Gabbai and Sallai: 928 in all. Joel son of Zikri was their overseer, and Judah son of Hassenuah was second in command over the city.
From the priests: Jedaiah son of Joiarib, Jakin, Seraiah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the chief officer of the house of God, and their fellow priests who did the work of the temple, 822 in all; and Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malkijah, and his fellow priests, heads of families, 242 in all; and Amashsai son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer, and their fellow priests, capable men, 128 in all. Their overseer was Zabdiel son of Haggedolim.
From the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni; and Shabbethai and Jozabad, leaders of the Levites, who were in charge of the outside work of the house of God; and Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, the leader who began the thanksgiving at prayer; Bakbukiah, second among his fellow Levites; and Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun. All the Levites in the holy city were 284.
The gatekeepers: Akkub, Talmon and their fellow gatekeepers, who kept watch at the gates, 172 in all. The rest of the Israelites, priests and Levites were in all the towns of Judah, every family on its own inherited land. The temple servants lived on the Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple servants.
The overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, one of the descendants of Asaph, the singers who were responsible for the service of the house of God. For there was a command from the king concerning them, and a fixed arrangement for the singers, providing what each day required. Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, a descendant of Zerah son of Judah, was the king’s agent in every matter concerning the people. As for the villages with their fields, some of the descendants of Judah lived in Kiriath-arba and its surrounding towns, in Dibon and its surrounding towns, in Jekabzeel and its villages, in Jeshua, Moladah, Beth-pelet, Hazar-shual, Beersheba and its surrounding towns, Ziklag, Meconah and its surrounding towns, En-rimmon, Zorah, Jarmuth, Zanoah, Adullam and their villages, Lachish and its fields, and Azekah and its surrounding towns. So they settled from Beersheba to the valley of Hinnom. The descendants of Benjamin lived from Geba onward, in Micmash, Aija, Bethel and its surrounding towns, Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, Lod and Ono, and Ge-harashim. Some divisions of the Levites that had been in Judah were joined to Benjamin.
