Matthew 4
Open Word Bible
Then the Spirit led Jesus up into the wilderness, where the devil would tempt him. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and at the end of it he was famished. Then the tempter approached him. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil brought him to the holy city and set him on the high corner of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he told him, “jump down. For Scripture says, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you,’ and, ‘They will catch you in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “Scripture says something else as well: ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’”
Then the devil led him up a very high mountain and showed him every kingdom of the world in all its glory. “I will give you all of this,” he told him, “if you kneel down and worship me.” “Get away, Satan!” Jesus said to him. “For Scripture says, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve no one but him.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and took care of him.
News reached Jesus that John had been arrested, and he went back to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum, a town by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was so that the word spoken through the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee where the Gentiles live: the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, and for those who sat in the land of death’s shadow, light rose like the dawn.”
From then on Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
As Jesus walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he noticed two brothers, Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew his brother, throwing a net into the water. They fished for a living. “Come, follow me,” he said to them, “and I will make you fishers of people.” They left their nets at once and followed him.
A little farther on he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in their boat with Zebedee their father, repairing their nets. He called them. They left the boat and their father without delay and followed him.
Jesus went from place to place all over Galilee. He taught in their synagogues, announced the gospel of the kingdom, and healed every disease and every illness among the people. News about him spread through all Syria, and people brought to him everyone who was ill: those suffering from all kinds of diseases and pain, people controlled by demons, people who had seizures, and people who could not move. And he healed them. Great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and the region beyond the Jordan.
