Deuteronomy 3

Open Word Bible

Then we turned and went up along the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out against us with all his army to do battle at Edrei. The LORD said to me, ‘Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, together with all his army and his land. Treat him as you treated Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.’ So the LORD our God handed Og king of Bashan and all his army over to us as well, and we struck him down until not one survivor was left to him. At that time we captured all his towns. There was not a single town we failed to take from them: sixty towns, the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom in Bashan. Every one of these towns was fortified with high walls and with barred double gates, and there were very many open villages besides. We devoted them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting every town to destruction, men, women and children. The livestock, though, and the goods taken from the towns we kept as plunder for ourselves. So at that time we took the land of the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon. (The Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir.) We captured every town of the plateau, the whole of Gilead and the whole of Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, towns that belonged to Og’s kingdom in Bashan. (Og king of Bashan was the only one left of the remnant of the Rephaim. His bed was made of iron, and it can still be seen in Rabbah of the Ammonites. It is about 13 1/2 feet long and 6 feet wide.) When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the stretch from Aroer beside the Arnon Valley, and half of the hill country of Gilead with its towns. To the half-tribe of Manasseh I gave the rest of Gilead and the whole of Bashan, the kingdom of Og. (The whole region of Argob, with all of Bashan, is known as a land of the Rephaim. Jair, of the line of Manasseh, took all the region of Argob up to the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and he gave these places in Bashan his own name, Havvoth-jair, which they still bear today.) To Machir I gave Gilead. To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the land that runs from Gilead to the Arnon Valley, its boundary running down the center of the valley, and on to the Jabbok River, the boundary of the Ammonites, and also the Arabah, with the Jordan as its border, from Chinnereth down to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, below the slopes of Pisgah on the east. At that time I gave you this command: ‘The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. But every fighting man among you is to cross over armed, going ahead of your fellow Israelites. Only your wives and children and your livestock — and I know how much livestock you have — are to stay behind in the towns I have given you, until the LORD grants your fellow Israelites rest, as he has granted it to you, and they in turn take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Only then may each of you go back to the holding I have given you.’ At that time I commanded Joshua: ‘Your own eyes have seen everything the LORD your God did to these two kings. The LORD will deal in the same way with every kingdom you are crossing over to. Do not be afraid of them. The one who fights for you is the LORD your God himself.’

At that time I pleaded with the LORD for his favor, saying, ‘Lord GOD, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand. Is there any god in heaven or on earth who can match your works and your mighty deeds? Please let me go across and see the good land on the far side of the Jordan, this good hill country and the Lebanon.’ But the LORD was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. The LORD said to me, ‘Let that be enough! Do not bring this matter up with me again. Climb to the summit of Pisgah and look out to the west, the north, the south and the east. See the land with your own eyes, because you will not cross this Jordan. Instead, commission Joshua. Encourage him and give him strength, for he will cross over at the head of this people, and he will give them as their inheritance the land that you will see.’ So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
