First Kings begins in splendour — Solomon asks for wisdom, builds the temple, and receives the queen of Sheba — and ends in fracture. After Solomon’s later compromises the kingdom splits into Israel and Judah, and a succession of kings is measured by whether they walked faithfully. The closing chapters introduce Elijah, whose confrontation on Mount Carmel and encounter with the still small voice are among the book’s best-known scenes.
